How did a working-class girl who dreams of being a writer end up with a job at one of the exclusive banks on the west coast?
Dumb luck, that’s how.
Iโm pretty sure that any minute now, the Powers That Be will realize I donโt belong here. Before that happens, I need to figure out how to fit inโhow to look the part, dress the part, and act the part.
Fortunately, thereโs Marcus.
Hiring him to be my date for the office party was easy.ย
Blackmailing him into helping me revamp my image is actually kind of fun.
But not falling for him?
That might be impossible.

In an ill-advised moment of rebellion, I turned my back on my old job and my familyโs wealth. Now Iโm in Los Angeles working four part-time jobs and contemplating my life choices.
I grew up mingling with the rich and mighty, so Iโm not worried when Alex hires me to impress her snooty co-workers.
And Iโm only a little worried when she blackmails me into being her makeover mentor.
But when I start to fall in love with her?

The rings and rings, and Iโm rehearsing what Iโll say to his voice mail when Marcus picks up.
โGood morning, Kitten.โ His voice is thick with sleep. Somehow, over the weekend, Iโd already forgotten how deep it is, and his baritone seems to vibrate right through to my core, distracting me with thoughts of the molded biceps and abs that go with it.
โCanโt go there,โ I mutter.
โWhat was that?โ
Shit, did I say that out loud? I hit my forehead with the palm of my hand. โI need your help, Hollingsworth,โ I say in a low voice. โYouโre not going to believe whatโs happened to me this morning.โ
โGood morning, Marcus. Iโm sorry to wake you, Marcus. How was the rest of your weekend, Marcus?โ he replies.
โOh, for crying out loud, itโs nine a.m. on a Monday, Marcus. Most of us are up and running by now.โ I freeze. โWait, is the starlet of the week there?โ
โThe what?โ
โAre you all groggy because youโve got a woman there with you?โ
โDo you honestly think Iโd take a call from another woman if I had one here with me?โ He actually sounds offended. โUnlike some people, I have manners,โย
Okay, this conversation is getting off track. โLook, Hollingsworth, I need your help.โ
โOh, goodie.โ He yawns. โOkay, Kitten. Whatโs up?โ
โI just got asked to serve on a committee.โ
โYou woke me up to tell me youโre serving on a committee.โ Itโs not a question so much as an expression of profound resignation.
โItโs a big deal. Kind of like a promotion with more work and no extra money.โ
โSounds like just what you need. Maybe itโll keep you out of trouble.โ
โWhat I need is your help. Youโre good at stuff like this. Plus, Logan was flirting with me. For real. I think. I need you to tell me what to do.โ
โThe only part of this conversation I understand is that you need my help with something, so let me ask you: what are you going to do for me in return?โ
I bite my lip. Iโd been kind of hoping heโd just help me because heโs nice, but that may be asking too much. โUm โฆ not turn you in to Cassandra?โ
โThat one doesnโt work anymore. You turn me in, she slaps you with a five-hundred-dollar fine,โ he points out evenly. โAnd you definitely donโt get my help. What else have you got?โ
I rack my brains trying to think what I can offer him, but short of hard, cold cash, I canโt think of anything. And Iโm running low on cash. โOh crap, I donโt know, Hollingsworth. Are you going to make me beg?โ This is followed by a long silence. โAre you still there?โ
โMm โฆโ His voice sounds thick now with something besides sleep. โJust picturing you on your knees in front of me.โ
