132B2F94-54EE-4E9D-8F0F-4E4B8B4FF452Rocker Jesse Winters just wants to be left alone. If he could melt into oblivion he would and bid farewell to the wild child of rock n’ roll so many have dubbed him in recent months. Truth is, there was never anything reckless, wild or even deliberate about most of the things that had happened on Wild Child’s last tour, but had anyone cared to listen? No! Which was precisely why he was sitting in a cabin high up in the Colorado mountains, hoping the incoming blizzard would bury him forever.
Ryker Jorgensen left the VA hospital with a bunch of prescriptions and pamphlets on how to deal with reentering the civilian world, not that he’s in any hurry to do so. His nightmares still keep him up at night, and every new limitation he discovers gives him more reason to believe that he’s hopelessly useless now. Better to drive up to his cousin’s cabin and lick his wounds. Come spring, maybe, he’d look into being around people, if only for long enough to make the kind of money he’d need to buy his own secluded place.
The last thing he ever expected to see was the man whose face had been plastered in his footlocker and his dreams for the better part of the past six years, but Jesse Winters is nothing like he imagined. When trying to leave Ryker out in the storm doesn’t work, Jesse resorts to ignoring him. But two wounded souls trapped in a snowed in cabin have little choice but to reach out for one another when emotionsĀ get frayed. His only hope is that Jesse will trust him enough to let him drag him back from the edge before he’s just another burned out star in the legacy that is rock n’ roll.

Halfway to Someday

By Layla Dorine

Jesse Winters is at the end of his rope: the result from every relationship the famous rocker has had. Whether it be between his parents, his band mates, or the stalker/boyfriend-from-hell, he has become the perfect example of what the lasting effects of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse can do to one’s psyche. Jesse is a kaleidoscope within himself. His lyrics are breathtaking, intelligent, and dark. Yet, at times, he seems almost child-like.

Ryker Jorgensen wants to decompress after numerous tours in the military—the last one being the worst of them all. The result is that he suffers from PTSD. When he opens the door of his cousin’s cabin in Colorado, his whole world will be turned upside down because Jesse Winters has already made himself at home there. Ryker is kind, compassionate, a voice of reason, and the calm to Jesse’s turmoil as well as his biggest, most influential advocate. I fell in love with Ryker because he put his own needs and demons on the back burner to care for someone he just met.

Two things crossed my mind at that point: either this is going to be the equivalent of watching a train wreck unfold; or second, maybe … just maybe, these two anguished souls might be able to help each other. What I found was a mixture of the two.

At times the story felt long and somewhat repetitive, yet I understand the depth of why the author was trying to explicate what these two were going through. Both situations were bad. Really bad. But empathy and kindness and love have a strange and magical way to help heal the heart and strengthen the soul.

This story shows us how two beautiful but very damaged people help one another find the will to crawl their way out of hell and, in the process, find love where they’d never expect it.

The storyline is well-written, although it could have used another once-over from a proofreader. The characters are endearing, vulnerable, and so deserving of love and happiness. The supporting characters (towards the end of the book) made me wish we could have met them sooner. My only gripe is that the ending felt rushed. Maybe in the next book of this series, we can get a glimpse of what Jesse and Ryker’s future looks like. In any case, Halfway to Someday gets five stars from me. I’ve no doubt that author Layla Dorine put her heart and soul into this book.

Layla got hooked on writing as a child, starting with poetry and then branching out, and she hasn’t stopped writing since. She writes about artists, musicians, loners, drifters, dreamers, hippies, bikers, truckers, hunters and all the other folks that she’s met and fallen in love with over the years. Sometimes she writes urban romance and sometimes it’s aliens crash landing near a roadside bar. When she isn’t writing, or wandering somewhere outdoors, she can often be found curled up with a good book, a kitty on her lap, and her dog, Jinxx, by her side.

Title: Defending Roxanne
Series: GHOST Book #2
Author: PJ Fiala
Genre: Adult Military Romantic Suspense
Release Date:Ā October 22, 2019
Cover Design: Cover Me Photography & Design

Secrets and lies have become deadly.

Ā

Ā

While investigating the murder of her parents, Roxanne Bowman encounters more than she ever thought she would. The secrets that both of her parents kept knock her off kilter. Finding an intruder in their home afterwards changes her life forever.
Ā
GHOST operative, Hawk Delany is back in the swing of things after being shot while working a case. Sent to Washington D.C. to investigate the murder of a foreign dignitary, and an American couple with ties to deadly secrets, places him in a precarious position, between the fight to help solve the murders and to keep his heart from theft by the lovely Roxanne.

Chapter 1

“Roxanne, it was weird, he looked like your dad’s cousin, Raymond. Do you remember Raymond? He was always a bit different and he had so much trouble dealing with people. That’s why when I saw this man following me, it completely scared the crap out of me. Then, I saw him again yesterday and I don’t know what to do.”Ā

Roxanne’s eyes flew open. Staring at the ceiling, her heart pounded in her chest as her mother’s words came back to her. Throwing back the covers, she sat up and turned so her feet were touching the floor. Her childhood bedroom still had the same furniture, same bookcase across from her bed, same creeks in the floor. The only things that had changed were that her mother had repainted the room to a soft gray last year and had updated the bedding to match.

“I want you to be comfortable when you come home, and you’ve outgrown the pink floral patterns. This suits you so much better,” her mother had said. Oh, how she wished she could speak to her mom now.

Sliding on her slipper socks, she walked out of her room and hesitated. This home seemed too large and ominous somehow now. Glancing down the hall to her right, her parents’ bedroom door was closed now and would be forever if it was up to her. But, only time would tell. Her brothers, Brendan and Matthew’s, bedrooms were to her left. It had been her paternal grandparents’ home before they passed, then her family’s. Now it belonged to her and her brothers.

Descending the enormous, dark mahogany staircase with its white-painted handrails, which curved to the right of the large foyer in their old Georgetown home, she turned left and entered her parents’ office.Ā

Her mother had remodeled this room twenty years ago, but it still suited the era of the house. Majestic mahogany pillars stood adjacent to the wall behind her father’s desk and in between those pillars were towering shelves of books. She loved playing in this room when she was a girl. Her father spent countless hours in here as his military career soared. His final position landed him at the State Department working as the Chief of Protocol, appointed by the President. It’s also the position that got him and her mother killed.Ā

Turning to the opposite side of the room, where her mother’s identical desk sat, she walked behind the desk and opened the left top drawer. Somewhere in here her mother had kept the key to the storage units in the basement. She needed to find a picture of Raymond. Her first order of business tomorrow morning would be to find Raymond and figure out why he had been stalking her mother and if he had anything to do with her death. The sheer level of chaos, not to mention the political uproar, that had enveloped her parents’ deaths and that of Kanan Mammodov, Prime Minister of Azerbaitani at the same time was monumental. Feeling around the papers in the drawer, she also found office supplies, staples, tape, and a ruler but she couldn’t feel the key. The moonlight that shone through the tall windows to her right was ample light for moving around the house, but didn’t offer enough light to see a small key. Yet, she enjoyed this darkness and the anonymity it offered. There had been at a minimum a handful of reporters on the street in front of the house since her parents died two weeks ago. Turning on the lights would allow them to see in better and use the zoom lenses on their cameras. Fuck that.Ā

Pulling the papers out of the drawer and laying them on top of the clean desk, she felt around a bit more. Nothing.

The top drawer on the right was next. Pulling the multitude of tablets and notepads from the drawer, she felt around the bottom of the drawer and found nothing. Repeating this motion for the five remaining drawers on each side, she had a mess to show for her efforts laying all around her and still no key. Standing with her hands on her hips, she looked across the room to her father’s desk, then remembered, he’d hidden things on the underside of drawers from time to time. Pulling out the top right drawer of her mother’s desk, she ran her hands underneath and smiled when she felt an envelope taped to the underside. Peeling the tape away and pulling the envelope from underneath, she smiled to herself as she removed the key and stepped over her mess to make her way to the basement. Through the foyer and into the living room, she turned right and headed to the back of the house and the kitchen.

The basement door was directly to the right of the entrance to the kitchen. Opening the door, she clicked on the light and descended to the basement. Over the years her parents had reinforced the basement and added lighting and the locked storage units, which her father had insisted upon having, since his position meant he had access to and possession of confidential information. Her mother then had insisted they have a room in the basement where family heirlooms and pictures were stored, keeping the room at a constant temperature and humidity free.Ā

Opening her mom’s storage room, she looked at the shelves, walking down the row until she found the storage boxes marked “Family Photos.ā€ Her mother, ever the organizer, had them stored by year. Trying to recall the last time they’d seen Raymond, she remembered being around ten, which was twenty-nine years ago. Finding this box, and pulling it down from the shelf with both hands, she turned to take it upstairs and lay the photographs out on the dining room table.

At the top of the steps, she nudged the light switch with her right elbow and closed the door with her behind. Turning to her left, she headed into the dining room from the kitchen and set the box on top of the table.Ā

A noise from her parents’ office caused her to freeze. Papers softly shuffling, then nothing. Slowly reaching around her back, her heartbeat increased rapidly, and dread filled her gut as she realized she’d left her gun upstairs in her nightstand. Shit.

Softly she crept to the door of the dining room which was directly behind the huge staircase she’d come down earlier. Staying close to the wall she listened again. Inhaling, she took a slow deep breath and crept out of the room and around the staircase.Ā

A massive hulk emerged from the office, and she froze for only a moment before turning to run in the opposite direction. The back door was in the kitchen; if she could get there, she’d run across the lawn and to the neighbor’s home for help.

Three steps from the kitchen she was grabbed from behind, an iron band of arm around her waist and one hand over her mouth. She was pulled into the hardened chest of her attacker and barely able to move. Her left arm was trapped next to her body in the steel grip of the man who now began to drag her deeper into her home.Ā

Panic flooded her brain and her stomach. She struggled to get free, twisting her body as much as she could, hoping to find a weakness to exploit. She began kicking back, but her slipper socks weren’t going to do any damage to this man. A second man appeared in her peripheral vision and chuckled before saying, “Well, Hawk, looks like you found yourself a thief.”

Writing has been a desire my whole life. Once I found the courage to write, life changed for me in the most profound way. Bringing stories to readers that I’d enjoy reading and creating characters that are flawed, but lovable is such a joy.
Ā
When not writing, I’m with my family doing something fun. My husband, Gene, and I are bikers and enjoy riding to new locations, meeting new people and generally enjoying this fabulous country we live in.
Ā
I come from a family of veterans. My grandfather, father, brother, two sons, and one daughter-in-law are all veterans. Needless to say, I am proud to be an American and proud of the service my amazing family has given.

valĀ·or: great bravery in the face of danger, especially in battle

Once, Jackson Richards had it in spades. As a member of the United States Special Forces, he fought alongside the bravest and most capable men he’d ever known.

Then one mistake landed them all in Hell.
Ā
For six months, he fought. But one terrible day, his captors learned the full extent of his skills, and that sealed his fate.
Ā
Tortured and broken for endless months in conditions that made Hell look like a five-star resort, Jackson Richards died, and Isaad was born. Shaped into a weapon for the wrong side, he’d forgotten who he once was. Who he was meant to be.
Ā
Until the days his captor imprisoned Joey Taylor.
Ā
Helping Joey and her marine escape reminded Jackson of the man he used to be. And now, he’ll fight. For himself. For the friends he thought he lost in Hell. And for Caro. The woman with a secret he can’t ignore.
Ā
If he’s strong enough, he’ll leave Isaad behind. Maybe then, he can take back his true name.
Ā
Ripper.
Ā
WARNING: This book contains scenes of torture and implied sexual violence that may be disturbing to sensitive readers.
ā€œYou’re a piece of work,ā€ I mutter to myself, and a quick inhalation from the sidewalk causes me to jerk my head around. Brown eyes meet mine, and the woman from the previous night freezes. In one hand, she carries her set of kitty cat brass knuckles, and in the other, a grease-stained bag.Ā
ā€œI…uh…b-brought you something,ā€ she stammers as she climbs the first step and then stops.Ā
ā€œHoping to bribe me into not axe murdering you?ā€ She flinches and squeezes her eyes shut for a brief moment. ā€œBad joke. Sorry. But Ripper…really is my name. Or what everyone calls me.ā€ I push up to sitting and rest my back against the church door. ā€œAnd I’m not a charity case.ā€Ā
ā€œDidn’t say you were.ā€ She thrusts the bag at me, and when I don’t move, drops it next to my hip. ā€œWe had extra. It’s rainy and kind of cold tonight. I thought…a hot meal might…shit. Never mind. Take it or leave it.ā€Ā
She turns, and the scents of cheese and salsa waft up from the bag. ā€œWait a minute, sunshine.ā€ Digging into the paper, I find an aluminum foil pan covered with a healthy serving of enchiladas lightly covered in cheese and red sauce, a half pint of refried beans, and a bag of marinated carrots and jicama. ā€œThis smells great.ā€Ā
A hint of pride straightens her shoulders, and the corners of her lips curve into a half-smile. ā€œThanks.ā€Ā
ā€œYou made this?ā€ I grabbed a granola bar and an apple at my apartment, but my stomach rumbles at the prospect of something…so very different than my everyday diet. The first bite takes me back to my mama’s cooking, and I think I moan a little.Ā
In the light of the street lamp, her cheeks glisten with the misty rain and turn a bright pink. ā€œI work at a food truck. Today’s menu was Mexican comfort food.ā€Ā
ā€œMy mama learned how to cook from my abuela, who grew up in Mexico. These are the best enchiladas I’ve had since I left Texas.ā€Ā
She toys with a blue pendant hanging from a silver chain around her neck. Joy and sadness battle for control of her features, but joy seems to win in the end. ā€œThank you. That means a lot.ā€Ā
A tendril of long brown hair plasters itself to her cheek as she stares down at her sensible black shoes. Her ankle’s wrapped in an ACE bandage, and as she fidgets, I can tell she isn’t putting all her weight on it. ā€œYou okay? After last night?ā€Ā
ā€œOh. Yes. I should…go. Let you eat in peace.ā€Ā
ā€œWait.ā€ I don’t know why I’m stopping her. But the idea of her being hurt, and that I caused it, doesn’t sit well with me. ā€œWhat’s your name?ā€
ā€œCara,ā€ she says quietly.
ā€œYou live…uh…close?ā€ Her eyes widen, and I kick myself. If she didn’t think I was a stalker or an axe murderer before, she does now. ā€œI just mean…it’s wet out. And you weren’t the most graceful last night. I…be careful, okay?ā€
A scowl twists those heart-shaped lips, and she levels me with an acerbic stare. ā€œI’m not the one sleeping on the streets with no defenses. And I’m very graceful. When I want to be. Good night, Ripper.ā€ Her curtsey is a little lopsided since she isn’t putting her full weight on her right foot, but she turns on her left heel and starts limping away.Ā

ā€œā€˜Night, Cara.ā€ As the rain intensifies and I dig back into the takeout container of enchiladas, I wonder why it’s easier for me to talk to a stranger than it is the men I consider my brothers.Ā

I originally joined the Navy as an escape, to become more than a country farm boy. Being a Navy SEAL turned me into a man, but one without a life outside the military. I thought that was all I needed. Until everyone around began to find their Happily Ever Afters’. I realized my life was missing love, something I’ve been longing for. All it took was one simple letter from home to remind me that everything I ever needed was right there waiting for me.

Losing the love of your life before he was able to meet his child was the hardest thing I’d ever gone through. I tried to move on with my life, and find a new sense of normalcy with my daughter and myself. One simple holiday act of kindness has set my carefully choreographed life into a tailspin. I could never have guessed writing a simple letter to a deployed sailor would bring us to a place we can finally call ā€˜Home’ again.

Can these two trust in the things they can not see to find true happiness?

JUSTINIt’s just another day over here, sitting and waiting for something interesting to happen. It has been about a month since we got here, and I still haven’t heard anything from the pen pal services I signed up for.Ā I’m guessĀ that I must be a littleĀ toĀ boring for someone to write a letter too.

No matter keeping theseĀ knuckle headsĀ in line and out of trouble is a full-time job when we are onĀ mission. Just as I am about to hop in my bunk, I head the call for mail sound from the chow hall.

ā€œHey LT, aren’t you coming?ā€ Cowboy asks as he hopsĀ ofĀ his bunk and heads in that direction

ā€œWhat’s the point? There ain’t nothing in there for me, besides there the makings of a sandstorm brewing out there. I don’t want to be caught in that.ā€ I grumble as I lay back, placing my hands behind my head.

ā€œAwwĀ noĀ lady friends pinning after you old man? More than enough of me to go around I guess.ā€ Hard-on responds as he claps Logan on the back before heading out the bunkhouse.

ā€œMaybe I need to call the girls and let them know about all the ladies writing you
letters?ā€ I hope off my bunk and follow them, it wouldn’t hurt just to see if maybe I got lucky and someone sent me something. There is always hope, right?

ā€œFuck you LT! You know I am a one woman, I mean two-woman kind of man.ā€ Hard-On shouts over his shoulder. However, the panicked look on his face is priceless! I have never seen a man more in love with anyone that Charlie is with Avery and Amber. Who would have thought that it would take two women to tame thatĀ one.
Once we enter the Chow Hall, I notice Brass and head his way. It was a close call on whether he would be making this mission or not, with his motorcycle accident and all. I think in part of his new-foundĀ back boneĀ and that stubborn as hell woman of his he was pronounced fit for duty just in time.

ā€œHey Brass, waiting on something from that lady of yours?ā€ I ask, taking the seat next to him.

Don’t you mean his Mama?ā€ Hard-On plops down on the other side of him, barely missing the right hook Brass throws his way.

ā€œLayla always sends me something, never know what it is going to be. So, I’m here impatiently waiting just like the rest of you assholesā€ He grows. I guess Hard-on isĀ tillĀ giving him a hard time about his relationship with his girl. I don’t know much about what’s going but I do know it’s not the norm. As long as it isn’t illegal, he can do whatever the hell he wants.

Brass sudden becomes fixated on the door, ā€œHey Newb, where’s my shit?ā€
The newest member of our team, Brady, is headed our way. Now that Brass has finally lost the title of Newb he has taken to giving of Brady here a hard time. I can’t say that I blame him, it is a rite of passage in the SEALs. Although it took him longer than most, he is a better SEAL and man for it.

ā€œWhat shit are you talking about, Brass?ā€ Newb responds

ā€œMy laundry you ass. Ain’t nobody got time to be doing their own laundry. That’s what we have you for.ā€

ā€œBrass, last time I checked you had a Mama for that shit. I ain’t your Mama. Do your own fucking laundry.ā€ Newb says before turning to head out. Guess seeing if he had any mail wasn’t that important.

ā€œDamn! Now I know why you asses gave me such a hard time. That shit feels good as fuck!ā€ Brass says, and we all begin to chuckle. Suddenly I feel a tap on my shoulder, turning to see who it is. ā€œSorry to botherĀ yourĀ sir, but there is a letter here for you.ā€ I don’t even register who is speaking before I take the letter and rip it open. The pages smell like a warm spring day and are covered with elegant handwriting that can only come from a woman,

Dear LieutenantĀ McMillon,

With the holidays approaching much faster than I would like, I wanted to write you a letter to thank you for volunteering to defend our country. Military service is often a thankless job;Ā under paidĀ andĀ over worked. Deployed for months at a time, taken away from friends, family, and loved ones.
I am a CNA at one of the local hospitals and all of us on my shift decided to volunteer to bring happiness to someone else’s life. I am a Marine Corp widow, my late husband always said that mailĀ callĀ the highlight of everyone’s day. Just knowing that someone was thinking about them on the other side of the world made things a little better.
I’ve never been overseas or even on an airplane. I can’t imagine what it’s like to live in a different country for months at a time, especiallyĀ some placeĀ as dangerous as an active war zone.
I hope you’re as safe as you can be. The only thing I’ve done is move from Texas to California.
Do you have family or loved ones that write to you or is that why you joinedĀ this
program? Do you enjoy being in the Navy?
I have a little girl who is three going on thirteen. I can’t imagine being away from her for months at a time. IĀ barleyĀ like going to work every day, time is precious, and we must spend every minute as if it is our last.
I’m not sure what to say except thank you. Thank you for keeping me safe. Thank you for everything that you do, all the things that people not in the military don’t know you do.

Sincerely,
Becca

I can’t help but smile. Just this simple letter had changed myĀ outlookingĀ on the day. I’m going to write her back, just to say thank you of course. I’m not expecting anything to come of this, but just knowing that Becca took the time toĀ writeĀ me is enough. Maybe she will want to correspond further after this? This definitely gives me something to look forward too, which is a godsend around here.

Raised all over the country, I’mĀ a interestingĀ mix of East Coast meets West Coast with a little bit of Southern thrown in, just for good measure. I married a sexy man in uniform who let me spawn and am now raising a mutinous army of hell raisers that I created myself, all while he defends our country. I drink too much coffee until it’s late enough to drink too much wine andĀ amĀ sexually frustrated for your freedom. If you see me online, I’m probably sitting in a closet, hiding from my kids.Ā

FORD
Ford had a pretty good life.
He was part of a former elite commando team, a talented computer genius, and a member of the Wounded Souls MC. He had a real family with his brothers, their women, and kids. Life was good. Well, it would be except for one big sexy issue—a tall helicopter pilot with a mouth and body made for sin. Lucky didn’t know it yet, but Ford was coming for him.
LUCKY
After the horrific shooting at the FOB while on deployment, Lucky took the medical discharge the army offered and ran back to the only place he was accepted just as himself. The Wounded Souls MC. After years of being a part-time member, he was now out of the army and healed, ready to do his bit. The only obstacle in his way was in the form of the club’s computer expert and go-to babysitter. His only hope of staying away from Ford and out of his bed was Lucky’s fiancĆ©e. But one look at his former lover had Lucky thinking maybe it was time to dig deep for some courage and finally reveal his true feelings, not only to his blood family but to the man who’d captured his heart and refused to give it back.
Did he want it back? Could he finally stand up to his powerful family and admit he wanted to be Ford’s man?

I love the idea of being in love. Since my early teens when I first discovered Silhouette Desire novels my life has been all about reading. I would find myself re-writing scenes if I wasn’t happy with them and hiding them under my bed. That led me toĀ writingĀ love stories of my own. They all ended up under the bed and are still there, and there they will stay. I don’t do angst, inĀ factĀ it drives me crazy.
Ā

I am a mum of three beautiful girls, Australian, and have what most say is a weird sense of humor.

I spend my free time doingĀ movie, Sons of Anarchy, and Friends marathons. And reading.

I love Pina Colada’s and getting caught in the rain….. there’s that weird humor.

4 Hooyah!! Stars

Loving a Warrior is the first book in this series by Melanie Hansen. This is actually my first book by this author, but it certainly not be my last. I loved the slow burn, very low angst military story.

Shane and Matt literally run into each other the day before they start training for a chance to become a Navy SEAL. Ā At first, it is awkward, but they soon develop a friendship of sorts, to push each other through training.

The author does include details of all the training, to show that these men just can’t go to a bar and grab a beer and watch the game. Ā The training is beyond intense. Ā The physical endurance and mental fortitude it takes to takes to become a SEAL is incredible. Ā These men are pushed beyond human limitations. Ā When they do have down time, they are still training on their own.

Yes, this is a slow burn romance, but that absolutely worked for me. Ā Seeing how their friendship grew with patience and trust because of their training, was perfect. Ā Both Matt and Shane were very likable. Ā Shane was funny and outgoing, where Matt was more quiet and liked to think everything through, but they knew what each other needed. Ā  When they finally do get together, it is explosive.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in the series, Keeping the Warrior.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/Net Galley, in exchange for an honest review.

Fluent in sarcasm, Supernatural, and song lyrics, I like talking to people and finding what makes them tick, though that probably has to do with the Psychology degree. I’m up before the sun because my kids don’t sleep, chugging tea and coffee to keep my eyes open and my brainĀ semi functional. Being married to a man in uniform means I’ve lived a lot of places, survived seeing my husband for half the amount of time I’ve been married, and spent a lot of time raising my kids alone.Ā

I love to write messed up psychos with lots of angst, happily everĀ aftersĀ thatĀ haveĀ to be worked for. Women with sass and backbone, men with a twisted hero complex and the need to control are my favorite to read as well as write.Ā
