“Why?” I’m not sure I’ve met someone, a man particularly, who wouldn’t take a bet.

“Let’s just say I’ve never been given a bet I couldn’t walk away from,” he says with a cocky smirk. It sounds a lot like a challenge. One I can’t wait to break.

“So, if I bet you ten dollars you can’t stuff three California rolls in your mouth, right now, you wouldn’t do it?”

He laughs and picks up one of the aforementioned rolls. “I’ll eat them, but I won’t take the bet.” He pops it in his mouth and chews through his smile.

Okay, that was food. He’s a fighter, so he’s used to denying himself the finer things in life. This time I appeal to the other driving force of a man’s psyche. Laziness and sex.

“What if I told you that you wouldn’t have to train me anymore and I would still redesign your entire website. But the only thing you have to do is go over there and ask that girl on a date.” I point to a pretty blonde. One with legs for days who can’t avert her gaze from our table for more than a few minutes even though I’m sitting right here. 

He doesn’t even follow my finger. “Nope,” he says, popping the sound of the P with a giant smile.

“You’re crazy.” I shake my head and laugh. Competitiveness has always been one of my strongest qualities, and now I’m even more determined to get him to agree to a bet.

“I told you I don’t make bets. Besides, then I wouldn’t get to see your cute face anymore.”

I stick my tongue out at his fake compliment. My brain races to come up with something good. Something he can’t turn down. But it’s clear I have no clue what makes this guy tick. I think back to our earlier conversations and a stroke of either brilliance or utter idiocy flashes before my mind’s eye. My lips pull up with unbridled laughter and I brace myself for another rejection. “Okay, I’ve got one more for you.” This will be entertaining to watch.
“I’ll only bring you more disappointment.” He laughs.

“I’m sure.” I shake my head. “Okay, I bet you can’t last four dates. With me.”

“Deal,” he answers in an instant.

What the hell?

Kacey Shea is a mom of three, wife, and indie author who resides in sunny Arizona. She enjoys reading and writing romance novels as much as her son loves unicorns, which is a lot.

In the dim glow of the streetlights I observed Sean was wearing all black; dress pants and shirt, of course teasingly unbuttoned at the top with his cuffs rolled over his muscular forearms. I continued sipping from my glass, eyeing him suspiciously. I wasn’t sure what to say, how to feel, or if he was actually standing there.

“I thought you were still in Miami,” I pressed, taking a sip from my drink.

“I thought you’d be spending a Saturday night with your boyfriend.” His top lip rolled from between his teeth, jaw clenched, and eyes wild.

“Girls’ night,” I reminded him, smiling coyly. “When did you get back?”

“Tuesday.”

“You waited almost a week to tell me.” I swung at his arm playfully. “I’m hurt. I’m going back inside and you owe me a drink now that you’ve tampered with this one.”

I turned to walk back into the bar and I felt his fingers quickly wrap around my wrist and lift the glass from my hand. “I think you’ve had enough, Ave.”

My body warmed with his hand along the middle of my back as Sean guided me back to the booth. I was only on my second drink and resentful he thought it was his place to tell me I had enough. I had enough of his stupid, handsome face, that was for sure. I had enough of him the last time I saw him, when he left me alone. Shudder. I didn’t have enough then. Seeing him next to me, feeling his skin on my back, his eyes burning into mine, reminded me of how much not enough I had of Sean.

Ella and Lizzie were still dancing in the middle of the floor, leaving our booth empty. I noticed Jesse turn from the bar and gaze in our direction, his mouth spreading into a playful smile. It was one twisted reunion, and I couldn’t stop myself from attending.

“The contest clause is found to be valid, and as such, Marley and Ashton Bennington are stripped of any bequests in the will for having contested the will. My clerk will prepare the estate deed and deliver it to Ms. Bennington.” 

He leaned back in his red leather chair, removed his glasses, and looked to each side of the room. 

“That is my order,” he stated. He then signed a package of papers in front of him and handed them to his clerk.

“No fucking way,” Marley shouted and stood. “No fucking way are you taking that money away from me. And the Campendonk? Everyone knows that the Campendonk is mine. And the Freud. No, I refuse to accept this order.”

Her wild red hair fought its way out of the barrette, and she looked as though she was ready to leap across the table at the judge. The sheriff started walking toward her when her attorney gave a signal that he could deal with the outburst.

“Counsel, get your client under control,” the judge ordered. 

Poor Joe. From the way she was twisting and turning, it looked like he was going to have to wrestle Marley to the ground. She was unrelenting until she spied the deputy walking toward her and saw him touch his handcuffs. That was the only thing that settled her down. 

“Another outburst like that, I will hold you in contempt of court, and you’ll be spending ten days in jail, young lady. You were apprised of the consequence at the start of this trial, and I specifically had you and your brother sign a document reflecting that you understood this was something that could occur. 

“Now, to continue, I have prepared a separate order addressing Respondent’s request for attorney fees. I find that this litigation was frivolous in nature and lacked any legal merit. Therefore, I grant Alexander Clarke’s motion for attorney fees in the amount of one hundred eighty thousand dollars to be paid within thirty days of this order in certified funds and divided between Marley and Ashton Bennington in equal amounts. That is the order of this court and shall be filed accordingly. My deputy clerk is handing each counsel of record a copy on behalf of their clients.

“Mr. Bennington, you are to wait in the holding cell to be transported back to state prison,” the judge said. 

Samantha’s brother, Ashton, was serving an eighteen-month sentence for financial fraud in a low-security prison. Not quite the Bernie Madoff of Colorado, but he bilked enough people out of their money that the word intentional rang true. If he had prevailed here, his creditors would have been like jackals around a dead carcass. 

And, with that, a year of a bloodbath of a trial ended. Now, Sam and I could marry with no ethical violation hanging over my head.

His smile widened, and he pulled up a box from nearby, seating himself beside her. “After all this time, pet,” he purred. “Don’t you think I know you by now? I knew you before we’d even met. I know what you’re thinking, Molly. You are quite literally an open book to me.”

She flushed, her head falling forward as though the admission was shameful. She was ashamed, because he was right. He did seem to know her. He knew what she was going to be thinking, what she wanted, and just how to control her. It was freaking infuriating.

“Look at me.” His voice was sterner, having taken on some of the quality which made the knot of anxious energy in her belly tighten. She complied, not wanting to rile the beast in him. Their eyes met, his mesmerizing green orbs utterly compelling. His hand came slowly to her face. Molly flinched out of instinct, but relaxed when he began to caress the side of her face with calm, gentle strokes. “This is your story, pet,” he mused. “Our story. If you want to run, then I am not going to stop you.”

“But you will chase me?” she whispered, her fear furling as simmering arousal at his touch began to flood her system. She knew she shouldn’t crave him, but she found herself leaning into the warmth of his hand. It was like a reflex. Despite the fact this was the same hand that had captured, and tormented her, it was also the hand that had rescued and comforted her – and pleasured her.

Connor’s chuckle resonated deeply inside of Molly’s body. “Of course,” he answered, his fingers tightening in her long dark hair. “I will chase you because you’re mine, pet. You belong to me now, we both know that, don’t we?” He hesitated as though he expected her to speak, but she merely blinked at him. Too terrified to respond. For a moment they just stared at one another, the admission lingering in the dank air around them.
