Jake–

My phone chimes, and I glance at it.

Rebecca: I’ve been thinking about you.

I shove my phone in my pocket and slap my palm on the bar, standing. “I’m gonna take off now. Nice seeing you, Angel.”

“Hey.” Cole grabs my arm and pulls me in, dipping his head to my ear. “Need you to find out how much Hot Wax knows about our friends.”

I straighten and meet his eyes. Goddamn it. I nod. “Sure, Prez.” He lets go of my arm, and I stalk outside. Fucking hell. Last thing I want to do is see Rebecca again. I light a cigarette, pull out my phone, and text her.

Me: Where r u

Rebecca: On patrol

Me: Got time to meet

Rebecca: I always have time for you, handsome

Me: Meet me at the convenience store on the corner of Capitol and Berryessa, 10 minutes 

Rebecca: See you then

I take one last drag off my smoke, flick the butt across the parking lot, shove my phone in my pocket, and climb on my bike.

Ten minutes later, I roll into the parking lot of the quick mart. Rebecca’s not here yet, so I take a spot away from the building and wait. Five minutes later I spot her squad car coming up Capitol. She swings in and backs into the spot next to me. I’m sitting sideways on my seat, smoking a cigarette as she powers down her window.

“You’re late.” I squint through the smoke I exhale toward the twilight sky.

She grins. “I was across town, sweetheart. How are you? You look damn fine sitting there.”

I ignore her question and comment and look across the parking lot. “Heard you made a big bust the other day.” She stays quiet, so I meet her eyes.

“Did you, now?” Her voice is a whisper.

“Satan’s Slayers.”

She opens her door, but I shut that down quickly, glancing around. “Stay in your car.”

Her eyes scan the lot. “Why?”

“Because I said so. What made you stop those two the other day?”

Her brows lift. “It helped you, didn’t it?”

“That why you did it?”

She looks away. “Is this the only reason you wanted to meet? Just to ask me about that arrest?”

“How’d you know about them, Rebecca?”

“I…” She shrugs. “I hear things.”

That has my chin pulling to the side, and I’m suddenly wondering if she’s planted a bug somewhere on my bike. “What’d you hear?”

“A little birdy told me they firebombed your club’s business.”

I stand up and lean my palms on her open window. “What fucking birdy, Rebecca?”

“Don’t get so upset, Jake. It was a friend in the fire department. Why do you care?”

“I’m in the business of caring about club information getting out. If you’re smart, you’ll stay out of our business, Rebecca.”

“It helped you out, didn’t it? You think I want them to hurt you?”

“I can take care of myself. I don’t need you getting in the middle of whatever happens with that bunch, understand?”

“You do care about me.” Her face lights up at my words.

I shake my head. “No. I don’t. I wish to God I’d never met you.”

Her chin lifts, and her eyes narrow. “You’re just saying that, just playing the tough guy. I get it.”

“I’m not playing anything. That’s what you don’t get.”

She puts her car in gear. “You want to know how I found out about the Slayers, then meet me at our spot tonight.” She hits the gas and pulls away, and I back away from the squad car as she peels out.

“It’s not our fucking spot,” I yell after her like a fucking idiot. I drag a hand through my hair, knowing I’m going to have to meet her to get that information. “Goddamn it.”

Tess— 

I wake up and glance around. Nope, it wasn’t a dream. A clock by the bed says six a.m. I blink against the morning sun and stare over at the man in bed with me. He’s on his stomach, the sheet just barely covering his ass. The cute little dimples at the base of his spine are revealed. I go up on an arm to get a better view now that there’s light in the room, and that’s when my eyes hit the full back tattoo— the one I couldn’t see in the dark last night. 

I don’t need to read the words; the exact replica of the Devil Kings MC’s center patch tells me everything. 

Oh. My. God. What have I done? He’s turned away from me, and all I can see is his profile. Goddamn it, he can’t be one of them. No. I scream on the inside but keep still as a statue on the outside. My heart races, and I feel light headed. This can’t be happening. Lord, please tell me I did not just sleep with one of my father’s MC brothers. 

I scan the room, my gaze furtive. That’s when I spot the black leather cut hanging over the back of a desk chair, its colors on full display. Devil Kings MC, Georgia. 

Fuck. Fuck. Fuckity-fuck! 

How could I have been so stupid? 

The last thing on this earth I want is to go down the same road my mother did. I worked too hard getting my associates degree in business administration and working my ass off at my job, fighting tooth and nail to be considered for the promotion to events planner to throw it all away for some biker, even if he is the best sex I’ve ever had. 

Panic sets in, and I know I have to get the hell out of this room, out of this house. Now. 

I slip from the bed, scoop up by clothes, and grab my little cross body bag that barely holds my phone and wallet. 

I tiptoe across the room and pause in the doorway. I can’t resist taking one last look at the man. He was amazing last night. We clicked sexually in a way I’ve never experienced. 

I sigh at the unfairness of it all and slip out. 

I move down the hall and stop in the kitchen to scramble into my clothes. It’s as neat as the rest of the house, and I wonder if there’s a girlfriend he’s cheating on who comes over and cleans his place. Asshole. I want to believe it because I want to wash away all the good from last night and replace it with a different painting—one of a jerk who’d cheat on his woman. It’ll be easier to walk away, and I know I have to walk away. There is no way in hell I’m getting involved with one of those bastards from my father’s MC. No fucking way. 

I quietly move through the garage and into the cool morning air. I jog half a block away before I pull my phone out and call Hayley. 

On the third ring, she picks up, sounding groggy as hell. “…’lo?” 

“It’s me,” I hiss. 

Her voice immediately perks up. “Tess? Where are you?” 

“I just walked away from his house. Can you come get me?” 

“What’s wrong? Are you okay?” 

“I’m fine. But you aren’t going to believe who this guy is.”

He locks
the door and prowls toward me.

“That’s a
real pretty dress, Hot Rod.” His eyes sweep over me. “You want to keep it in
one piece, you better take it off quickly. If I do it, it’s gonna be in
tattered shreds on the floor. That’s how badly I want you.”

His eyes

I take a
step back, then another, enjoying the hunt, disobeying his demand. His eyes

Sly is the sixth book and the last installment in the Kings of Carnage MC series. The first five consist of contributions from other amazingly talented MC authors: Chaos by Hilary Storm; Bash by Sapphire Knight; Jinx by Chelsea Cameron; North by M.N. Forgy; and Bouncer by Kim Jones.

It’s no secret that Nicole James is and has always been my favorite author. It’s impossible not to get sucked into the world of her characters when she all but pulls out a barstool in one of her clubhouses, smacks the back of a leather tattoo chair, or hits the throttle of a big ol’ Harley and invites her readers to hop on, relax, and enjoy the ride. And what a ride it is.

Simply put, SLY is one of the BEST books I have ever read. Nicole knocked this one out of the ballpark ten times over. The main reason? Michaela and Sly.

Michaela is one of the most likable female characters that I’ve read in such a long time. She’s young and has reluctantly been handed Mooney’s Pub, a longtime fixture in the small town of Uprising, Georgia, and expected to take over her family’s legacy. Michaela is smart enough to know she’s in over her head but even smarter in her determination and drive—along with some Irish stubbornness and sass—to make a successful go of it. She’s down to earth, doesn’t let anyone walk all over her, and has a huge, beautiful heart.

Sly is just one-hundred percent of hot alpha biker badassness. He’s loyal, extremely smart, bossy as f#%k, never says something he doesn’t mean, and I gotta say, full of stamina! How could Michaela not fall for him, right? The things that come out of this man’s mouth are not mushy, and because of that, he’s actually funny as hell. Nicole made him a man’s man, and he couldn’t be more mouthwateringly perfect! The banter that ping pongs back and forth between Sly and his club brothers is entertaining yet shows the depth of their loyalty and respect for one another.

Let me just say this—there is so much more to this storyline that captivates and engages. Nicole adds in well-thought-out original subplots and flashbacks that, of course, create more wonderful side characters, and it all blends into one big, worldbuilding story. Each chapter flows effortlessly into the next, and I couldn’t put it down.

I’m enthusiastically giving Sly ten shiny chrome stars. A MUST READ from the one-and-only Nicole James, the queen of all things MC.

Lifting a towel from the basket in the corner, he shut his eyes and inhaled, pressing the fabric to his nose. His body instantly hardened, his instincts driving him to her bed where she slept soundly.
